What Southport is built from
A small riverfront town at the mouth of the Cape Fear in Brunswick County, laid out on a grid under an almost continuous live-oak canopy. Nineteenth-century frame cottages and Victorian houses near the waterfront, mid-century infill behind them, and larger new communities spreading inland toward the highway.
Overwhelmingly retired and largely arrived from elsewhere. Houses here hold a lot of inherited furniture and inherited rugs, and a lot of rooms that are kept nice and used rarely.
The Southport problem
The insect eating wool in Southport is usually not a moth. Carpet beetles are the coastal Southeast's quieter problem: the adults are small mottled beetles that feed on pollen outdoors and come in through screens and open doors in spring, and it is the larvae — bristly, about the size of a grain of rice, and shy of light — that eat keratin. Wool, silk, hair and feathers all qualify. They do not need a closed-up house the way clothes moths do; they will work away happily in an occupied room, under a sideboard, along the strip of rug beneath a bookcase that never sees a vacuum. The tells are specific: shed larval skins that look like tiny empty husks, a fine sandy frass down at the base of the pile, and grazing that begins on the underside so the surface looks intact right up until it does not. A town under a permanent oak canopy, with flowering shrubs against the windows and doors standing open in April, is close to ideal for them. The order of work is the same either way — deal with the infestation first, then reweave — but knowing which insect you actually have changes what you do about the rest of the room.
