What Ogden is built from

The Ogden problem
The most common avoidable ruin we see in this part of the county has nothing to do with the rug. It is the pad underneath it. Cheap non-slip pads are either PVC or a latex-and-filler foam, and both come apart in heat and humidity: the plasticiser migrates out of the vinyl and the latex oxidises, and what is left behind is a tacky residue that bonds the pad to the back of the rug and to the floor finish at the same time. On a hard floor in a house that runs warm and humid, that takes a couple of years rather than a couple of decades. By the time anyone lifts the rug, the pad has printed a grid into the foundation, the residue has gone brown and wicked up into the pile from beneath, and the floor carries a matching shadow. Getting it out is solvent work on a fibre that does not enjoy solvents. The other half of the same problem is quieter: a solid pad is a vapour barrier, so it stops the back of the rug from ever drying, in a climate where the back of the rug is the exact thing that needs to.
