What Wrightsville Beach is built from
A barrier-island town of about four hundred acres reached over the drawbridge from Wrightsville Avenue, with Banks Channel behind it and the Atlantic in front. A thinning stock of older cottages, a great deal of replacement construction raised on pilings, and condominium buildings at both ends of the island.

Between guests there is a changeover window measured in hours, so whatever happens to a rug has to happen fast and in the room: a bonnet, a wand, a rented machine, a spray-and-extract pass down the traffic lane. Every one of those leaves detergent behind, because there is no time to rinse and no way to rinse properly on a floor. Surfactant residue is sticky and it does not sit still — it grabs the next fortnight's grit and holds it down at the base of the pile, so the rug re-soils faster after each clean than it did before. Owners read the accelerating dirt as heavy use and answer it by cleaning more often, which is precisely the wrong direction. Residue only leaves in immersion, flushed until the water runs clear, and a rug that has had two seasons of changeover cleaning generally needs that before it will respond to anything at all.
