What Figure Eight Island is built from
A private residential island north of Wrightsville, reached by one guarded swing bridge from the Porters Neck side, with no shops, no hotel and nothing commercial on it. Houses are large, individually designed and almost all raised on pilings, with the living floor a full storey above open ground.
Second homes and family houses, plus a discreet high-end rental trade. Occupancy is uneven — full in July, quiet for long stretches, and rarely predictable from the outside.
The Figure Eight Island problem
Piling construction changes where the moisture comes from. The living floor here is a deck suspended in outdoor air, so the underside of your floor sits at outdoor temperature all year while the top of it is being cooled into the low seventies. In spring and early autumn, when the ocean is still colder than the air and dew points are running in the sixties and seventies, that assembly spends whole nights below the dew point of the air in the room — and the coldest thing in contact with that floor is the back of the rug. Water condenses into the foundation from beneath, night after night, with nothing spilled and no leak to find. The rug reads as perfectly fine from above for a long time and then goes musty everywhere at once rather than in a patch, which is the tell that it came from below rather than from above. Access compounds it: one bridge, a deliberately quiet island, and nobody popping across to check. Whatever starts in April is generally discovered in June.
